Hiring a Pet Photographer? Top 10 Things to Consider!

Top 10 Things to Consider When Hiring a Pet Photographer

Are you thinking about hiring a pet photographer but aren’t sure where to start? Are you feeling overwhelmed with choices and not sure who to choose? Well, you’re in luck!  I’ve put together a list of the top 10 things to consider when hiring a pet photographer. If you keep these considerations in mind it will make choosing a pet photographer that much easier! Here are the top 10 things you need to think about when hiring a pet photographer (in no particular order)!

1. Does the photographer specialize in pets?

Do you want to ensure that your fur baby will be comfortable during the portrait session?  If so then you should choose a photographer that specializes only in pets. You can tell quickly from a photographer’s website if they specialize in other areas. Photographers who photograph weddings, seniors, families, and newborns may not have as much experience with pets.

2. Do you like the pet photographer’s style?

Look at the images on the photographer’s website, Facebook, or Instagram. Would you love to have photos of your fur baby like the ones you see? Do you prefer posed studio portraits or on-location shoots? Make sure you have the opportunity to view the images from a full session, not just ones in their portfolio. A “portfolio” showcases the photographer’s best work whereas a “client gallery” shows multiple images from one portrait session. If a photographer refuses to show you a client gallery then I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

3. Is your fur baby’s comfort the pet photographer’s top priority?

Is it clear on their website that they care about your pet’s comfort and safety? Ask them “what do you do during sessions to ensure pets’ comfort?” If they don’t answer this to your satisfaction then find another photographer.

4. Does the pet photographer ask questions about your fur baby?

Prior to booking your session, you should expect a photographer to ask questions all about your fur baby. Questions should cover topics such as personality, story, age, medical conditions, allergies, reactions to new environments, attention, and special requests.

5. Does the pet photographer actively volunteer with animal shelters?

While certainly not a requirement, it can be an added bonus if your photographer volunteers their time to local animal shelters. You can feel good about supporting someone who supports local organizations that help animals. See how Paws Fur Joy Photography gives back to the community HERE.

6. What do their past clients say?

Check out their reviews. You can typically find these as testimonials on the photographer’s website, google reviews, or Facebook page. Check out Paws Fur Joy Photography’s reviews on Facebook HERE.

7. Does the pet photographer promptly reply to your inquiries?

If a photographer takes weeks to get back to you then this may be an indicator that they may not be super reliable. I’d look elsewhere!

8. Do they insist on keeping your dog on a leash in public /unfenced areas?

If so then you know this photographer will have your pet’s safety in mind during your session. It is also an indication that they have the necessary skills to successfully edit out leashes using professional software.

9. Do they have a FAQ section of their website?

This will make it super easy for you to find answers to commonly asked questions that their clients would have. They usually cover topics such as how to book sessions, cancellations, turn around time for images, etc. Check out the FAQ for Paws Fur Joy Photography HERE.

10. What is your budget for pet photography?

Many pet photographers may list on their website how much you can expect to spend. After you send an inquiry some photographers may send you a pricing guide with more detailed information. Some photographers may offer only digital files whereas others may also offer printed products. Whichever pet photographer you choose, it’s important that they respect your budget and don’t make you feel pressured.
