You’ve probably noticed how attuned your pet is to your mood. Your dog or cat can pick up on whether you are feeling anxious, sad, or joyful. It’s amazing how animals are incredibly sensitive to energy, often acting as a reflection of what we humans put out into the world.
I saw this firsthand during a visit to my sister’s home. I had just gotten my second level certification level in the Let Animals Lead Method of animal Reiki. This is a meditative practice that invites calm into the space. It is meant to be done without expectations, pressure, or even physical touch. During this hands-off approach, the animal truly leads the experience.
As I sat quietly and entered a peaceful meditative state, something beautiful happened. Her dog Oakley licked my face, whimpered softly, and then tried to sit on my lap before gently flopping over onto his back, belly exposed; completely vulnerable and trusting. My sister whispered through tears, “He never does this.”
Behind me, her other dog Gem quietly watched, eventually lying beside me, also belly up. This all occurred in the span of just ten minutes.
Every animal reacts differently. Some will curl up beside you. Some may leave the room, only to return when they’re ready. Others stare softly, lean in for a gentle touch, or simply bask in the peace you’re creating. But always, they’re choosing. That’s the heart of Reiki: it’s pet-led, not practitioner-led.
Animal Reiki is not about “fixing” or “doing.” It’s about being. Specifically, being a calm, grounded presence with your animal. It’s a meditative practice that creates space for healing, peace, and deep connection.
I practice the Let Animals Lead® method developed by Kathleen Prasad. This means:
It’s about allowing your pet to engage (or not) on their terms. And often, they do in the most surprising and moving ways.
We’ll chat beforehand about your pet’s temperament, fears, or quirks. When I arrive, we’ll all enter together—especially important for shy or anxious pets. Then I’ll simply sit and allow your dog or cat to lead.

You are welcome to join in, too—I’ll guide you gently through the process if you’d like.
As a pet photographer, licensed therapist, and mindfulness guide, I see how deeply connected we are to our animals. Reiki isn’t a “woo” experience. It’s grounded. It’s peaceful. And it helps deepen our bond with the animals we love so much.
I’ve completed Level 2 certification in the Let Animals Lead® method, and I’m offering 60 minute sessions in the Triangle. They typically take place on weekend mornings.
If you’re curious or want to experience a session with your pet, I’d be honored to hold space for you. You can purchase at my shop HERE. Or please email me : abby@pawsfurjoy.com if you have any questions.
